Fun Friday Link: Video of ‘Zebra’ Escape in Tokyo

Embedded above and on YouTube here: Workers at a zoo in Tokyo this week held a biannual drill to prepare for a potential zebra escape.

Playing the part of the escapee: a zookeeper in a zebra costume. My favorite part is when the creature is “shot,” presumably by a tranquilizer gun, and falls slowly to the ground.

Talk About an Identity Crisis

2015 10 07 rat

I noted this on Facebook yesterday, and wanted to share here as well.

So, that new “hog nosed” rat: Consider the “discovery” from the animal’s persepctive.

You’ve lived your life in anonymity, as have your ancestors for time immemorial, and then one day it’s like, BAM. Your photo is plastered all over the Internets — and everyone’s making fun of your nose.

Talk about an identity crisis.

How to Spell My Name, According to Starbucks Baristas Across Southeast Asia

I love coffee.

I have a weird name.

And I live in Singapore and travel regularly in Southeast Asia.

That’s a recipe for some serious Starbucks barista mixups!

Herewith, a collection of misspellings of my name from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and more locations over the last year.

Thumb IMG 0721 1024

This one’s from Kuala Lumpur.

Thumb IMG 0722 1024
Can’t remember the location of this one.

Thumb IMG 0723 1024
This one’s from Jakarta.

Thumb IMG 0724 1024
Singapore, I think.

Thumb IMG 0725 1024
This one’s also from KL.

Thumb IMG 0726 1024
Another one from Singapore.

Thumb IMG 0727 1024
And another from Singapore, I think. This one’s pretty close, and completely logical.

Thumb IMG 0728 1024
Can’t remember where this one’s from. But it’s certainly phonetically accurate.

This one’s from Manila

Life would be so boring if my name were James or John.

My Favorite April Fools’ Day Gag of 2015: The ‘Motorola Selfie Stick’

I wish every tech firm didn’t feel the need to create an April Fools’ Day gag. But this one, from Motorola, made me smile.

Spotted on NYC Subway: (Fake) Ad for ‘Canine Plastic Surgeon’

I spotted this “ad” for a “canine plastic surgeon” recently on the 1 train here in New York.

2013 04 25 canine plastic surgeon

Despite the silliness of the concept, the ad is pretty convincing, since it’s done very much in the style of many local NYC subway ads. (Dermatologist Dr. Jonathan Zizmor‘s ads come to mind.)

However, a quick visit to PuppyLift.com, the (hilarious) URL mentioned, reveals that the “ad” is actually for Comedy Central’s “Kroll Show.”

Pretty clever.

Bangkok Street Life Inventions: Garbage Bag Poncho and Frond-Fashioned Napping Shade

I wanted to share two photos I snapped recently. They both demonstrate interesting Bangkok street life improvisations.

First: It’s the middle of rainy season here, so what do you do when you’re caught in an evening downpour without an umbrella?

Simple — make a poncho (with a cutout for your face) out of a plastic bag:

And second: What do you do if you’re a motorcycle taxi driver and your favorite hammock is getting too much mid-day sun?

Simple — fashion a shade out of some fronds and affix it to the over-hanging electrical wires:

Problems solved.

Off Topic: Finally Met Someone Bigger and More Conspicuous in Thailand than I Am

2012 06 10 np dino

From a photo I Tweeted and posted to Facebook earlier today. Couldn’t resist sharing.

At last, I came face to face with “someone” who’s larger than me — and certainly sticks out more than I do — here in Thailand.

Big folks who sometimes feel out of place in Asia or elsewhere may well sympathize.

Thanks to A for snapping the pic.
