1. You know that my neighbor Todd (affectionately dubbed Turtle Todd by those in the know) has a tortoise named Lightning that he walks outside every day in the summer (the winter months are too cold for Sir Lightning’s cold blooded self). Lightning is a huge hit in the neighborhood and has a semi-cult cultural status in Adams Morgan. Ask Todd how long he’s been on Kalorama and he answers “since Carter.” Lightning was the first thing I met when I first visited the street, a good 4 months before I would move in.

3. I’m not sure I’ve ever taken a photo of Lightning! I see families doing it all the time right outside. I’ll be sure to capture him in the next couple of weeks if we have some warmer weather again. By the way, Lightning is approx. 5 years old and will live for many many many more years. I’m told he’ll get much bigger, too. Right now, he looks about the same as the tortoise in the flickr photos.

4. Lightning is such a great name for a tortoise. In Ecuador I once saw (met?) a 100+ year-old tortoise named Miguelito. He lived at an elementary school and had carvings on his back from where people had inscribed threir initials, etc. Kind of sad.
