The Gallery Of “Misused” Quotation Marks is excellent. My favorite: “Sign on friend’s front door: Doorbell ‘out of order.’ Please ‘knock’ or ‘rattle’ letterbox.”

Britney Underground. “The Britney Spears Live from Las Vegas ads assaulted the Big Apple for weeks, amidst the post 9.11 trauma and heartbreak. To mimic the question penned on one ad poster, can we afford this anymore? The message this scantily clad teen offers in a time of war is uncertain, but several NYC subway riders didn’t hesitate to express their thoughts.”

“Hello to rap fans, I am ILL Mitch. I come from Russia to America now I am free to do 3 favorite things. These are rap and ride on my skateboard and hit my boxing bag. But most favorite thing is rap.”

Have a hankering for, say, a few POUNDS of Silly Putty? You’re not alone. People are “banding together in ‘putty pools’ to buy industrial quantities directly from the manufacturer, Dow Corning Corp.”

First it was giant cockroaches, and now it’s blue-ring octopi. In Thailand, they love exotic pets.

Looking back on September 11th, 2001:

  • The New York Times presents an archive of articles that it ran on the 11th and 12th. (Free registration required.)
  • The Washington Post lists the names of the more than 3,000 people who were killed, and features “the things that were symbols of joy” in the lives of the 184 people who perished at the Pentagon.
  • This op-ed by Jules Witcover, “Fresh eyes see America adrift,” describes some of the reasons I feel uneasy about the Bush Administration’s current foreign and domestic policy stances.

    Drug news:

  • “What coffee is to Americans is what khat is for Somalis.” A leaf called khat is becoming more and more prevalent among African and Middle Eastern immigrants in the US. When chewed, it produces an amphetamine-like high.
  • Snoop Dog says he’s given up illegal substances. Until recently, “he had been going through between three and four ounces of pot a day, spiking his high with liberal doses of alcohol.”
  • Nevadans will soon vote on a ballot measure, Question 9, that would make it legal to “possess and smoke as much as three ounces of marijuana.”

In “It’s Time to Turn Off Those Bells and Whistles,” Matt Richtel says that, in honor of the upcoming anniversary of September 11th, we should temporarily ditch our technological gadgets to remind us that people, not processors, are the most important things in our lives. I can’t believe I just now started reading Dave Eggers’s “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.” It’s extremely good.

CrashBonsai is the creation of John Rooney, an artist who is torn between the desire to create and destroy. Recently, he has been making bonsai plants, and combining them with model cars and trucks which he has creatively smashed and melted, to create ‘CrashBonsai,’ little living car crash sculptures.”
